Rid Your Home of Fleas Naturally

Fleas are ectoparasites that return every summer. Now, while you may give a damn to these creatures, but your pet doesn’t; the fleas are infamous bloodsuckers that slowly drain the health out of your little darling. But we are non-violent humans and therefore, we are not going to apply any toxic measure to weed them out; just a few cleaning products are all that we require as indoor pest control measures for accomplishing our target.

Let’s start by vacuuming every carpet, corners and furniture. Twice a week should prove enough, but if you have an extra dose of tenacity, the try removing physically every egg, larvae and adult insect that comes in your sightline.

Fleas are most likely to be found at places where the pet(s) spend(s) a lot of time; so vacuuming these places shall need some extra care. It’s best if you can use disposable paper vacuum bags; that way, you can seal and burn it away every time, ensuring a complete removal. This is an important part of your opted pest control measure, since adult fleas are capable of crawling back to your house.

Next, make it a routine to wash rugs and floor mats with hot water. You must also be careful about drying them completely; else, you shall be gifting the prolific pains a much-desired breeding ground. However, if you hate doing all that on a regular basis, then mix diatomaceous earth with boric acid in a 6:1 ratio and sprinkle it thoroughly over every place that you cleaned, including the closets. Wear a safety mask to stop the mixture from being inhaled. Another formulation is mixing eight parts of cleaning powder with 1 part of common salt; this mixture is effective in dehydrating both the larvae and adults and keeping the fleas’ habitats as dry as a bone. Fleas survive only in moist and shady areas; therefore, if you can, expose those areas to direct sunlight.

To make it a tit-for-tat situation for the fleas, put your bet on Steinernema carpocapsa – the un-segmented worms with elongated rounded body pointed at both ends; also known as nematodes – to make the parasites fall victim to a parasite. Sprays are available at garden-stores.

For now, this much is enough; fleas are attracted to warm blooded creatures but this time, they shall experience what it feels like to invade the home of a cold blooded killer!

But the last option is always a pest control professional; if all the above measures fail because of wrong applications, its better to call for the professional instead of using chemical pesticides; for fleas carry diseases and using chemical methods may just aggravate the spreading.
