How to Control Bees?

Bee control is something that goes beyond the mere nine letters and while for other insects control translates to kill, for the bees, one must keep in mind that the entire plant world owes to the honeybee. Apart from feeding the humans with roundabout 200 million pounds of honey every year, honeybees also pollinate the plants, roughly around 50% of them.

So why control something this beneficial? Simply because bees sometimes pose real threats to the human health; it’s the protein present in their stings that cause allergies killing anything between 50 and 100 people every year and its not always possible to carry an emergency epinephrine injection kit every time.

Let’s see first the type of bees recognized by entomology. Apart from the honeybee, there are the yellow and black bumblebee and the solitary carpenter bee. The easiest bee control method starts with destroying the nest, followed by aerosol sprays to knock down the angry, flying mob. However, pesticide formulas in the form of dust or powder work well if applied on the entrance of the bee nests. But then again, unless you are wearing the proper gear (bee suit), it can become a very big health risk. The nighttime is best if you are opting for this kind of treatment. If possible, then inject the pesticide inside the beehive.

But the abovementioned recommendations are for eradicating the honeybees; what if you just want to chase them away or stop them from advancing your home? To do that, you must know their food habits, which are typically flowers containing nectar and pollen; however, it’s also the syrups, sugar, fruit juices –in fact, any sweet substances that are capable of attracting the honey bees. Therefore, while you shall keep your home free from any sort of leftovers like those, it’s also essential to take care of trash containers for a complete remedy. If something fails to interest bees, chances are they won’t traverse that way.

Now, about the bee insecticides for an effective bee control. It’s only Ficam dust that is registered for bee extermination from dwellings. But persistent efforts are necessary if application of the same is not done correctly. However, Ficam dust is only effective in killing the worker bees (since it’s applied to the hive’s entrance) and not the queen, the drones or the house bees. So re-applications shall be necessary; if there is no food-bearer, the ones dwelling inside shall starve to death within some time. Else, remove the nest and burn it to stop other scavenging insects from being attracted to the wax and honey inside the hive.
